Eleven

Ofelia called Sully from the sidewalk in front of Pascal’s store when she was finished.

“I miss you so much,” Sully lamented by way of greeting.

Amusement danced through Ofelia’s insides. “We just saw each other.”

“Yes, but I’m with Jones. He sends his love by the way. He still thinks you’re the human equivalent of a superhero and that turns him on.”

“Isn’t he gay?”

“I try not to pay attention either way on that stuff. If he is, I think he would make an exception for you.”

“Have you come up with anything?”

“Not really. We’re hitting the books. Unfortunately, he likes to talk when reading. It should be quiet time, but does he care? That would be a big, fat no.”

Ofelia often found herself amused when Sully was the one who melted down. It was rare, but he was a bit of a whiner when he wanted to be. She felt that helped even out her meltdowns some. “Well, you’ll survive. I’ve got some news.” She filled him in. When she was finished, she waited for the explosion.

“Well, that changes things, doesn’t it?” he said finally.

“Most definitely.”

“Does that mean you’re going to Bywater?”

“What do you think?”

“I think I want you to be careful. Pascal didn’t come right out and say what this guy was. He kind of danced around it.”

“Pascal would never send me unprotected to someone he thought was dangerous.”

“Probably not. I still want you to be careful. People who keep secrets for a long time often panic when those secrets are endangered.”

“Oh, that was almost poetic.” Ofelia smiled. “I’ll be fine. I want to check on Rochelle anyway, so I can kill two birds with one stone.”

“Are you going to talk to her about the thing we talked about?”

“Yup.”

“Okay, well … be good. Also, if you could keep in touch, that would be great. I don’t want to spend the entire afternoon worrying about you.”

“I can take care of myself.”

“That’s why I worry. You’re the baddest witch on the block. That makes people itchy. Just remember that I cannot live without you.”

“Aw, that’s sweet. You really are the schmaltziest.”

“That’s a title I’m happy to wear. Keep me in the loop.”

“I will. You do the same.”

Sully was back to sounding annoyed. “I have severe doubts we’ll get anywhere given the team I’m dealing with. I might need you to help me hide a body later.”

“Ah, the couple that covers up a crime together, stays together.”

“That’s my thinking.”
